Dang it to heck! My cousin, with whom I was visiting (east coast, USA) this past week prior to flying back to NZ just sent me this picture of one of the great local critters I was most hoping to see (and spent hours actively looking for!) while there... a big black rat snake. Missed it by a few days.

Photo of tree branch in a fairly dense canopy, centred on a branch (with the windows & weatherboards of a nearby house visible through the gaps in the leaves) on which a stunning large snake, black with some white speckles and a white chin, is lying quietly. The tail end of the snake is hanging off the branch, suggesting it's well over a meter long... It's a black rat snake, a non-venomous constrictor that tends to be very benign with people co-existing quite happily, that's great at humanely …

How the mighty have fallen.
I remember c|net as a standard-bearer of tech journalism back in the 1990s. Theirs was one of the few bookmarks I opened regularly to read about tech news.
Red Ventures has destroyed its reputation, along with all their other properties’ like ZDNet (the other fantastic tech news site). RV’s decisive pivot to AI is likely fatal; they will accelerate the descent of all their outlets into a content swill mill fit only for your blocklist.

Sometimes I'm like, "he's 12, he should really be packing his own school lunch now." And then he does shit like this.

A plastic takeout container filled with something red. It's a white bottom with a clear lid; clearly different (and incompatible) pieces. Because it doesn't close properly, it is sloppily wrapped in gray duct tape.
Side view of same container. You can see that it's overstuffed with red pepper; it should've been in a container twice the size. The tape is failing to keep the lid shut, and contents are spilling out.

Task Failed Successfully: The Cracked Columbia Takeover and Expulsion
The sputtering 18-hour barricade-aided takeover of Columbia University by Hamas supporters ended last night faster than Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall; of course, the occupier's task failed successfully only after being rightly pushed from the second story ledge of Hamilton Hall by NYPD riot officers. As a graduate of Columbia University, I was chagrined for the students who occupied Hamilton,…

In 2004, a documentary movie was published (Supersize Me) where the filmmaker Morgan Spurlock eat nothing but mcdonalds food for 30 days. Like probably many, I saw that movie back then and liked it. I had read before that there were some doubts about some of the things described in the movie. What I didn't know until now was that very likely, some key parts of that movie are false and some of the health effects he described likely due to alcohol consumption 🧵
